Jan 1966 Coup And Biafra

Image
By Femi Fani-Kayode May 30th, 2019 represents the 52nd anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Biafra. I have written the following contribution to help mark that day. I hope it goes a long way to show where and when the trouble and challenges all started. also hope that it widens and stimulates the debate about the plight of the Igbo in the Nigerian state and to enlighten those that may not know why it is that so many young Igbos feel strongly about the concept of Biafra. Some of the events that I have written about here are painful and deeply personal but write we must in order to educate others, in order to establish the truth, in order to ensure that history does not repeat itself and in order to usher in an era of true reconciliation, peace, love and forgiveness in our nation. Kindly fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the flight! In the early hours of the morning of January 15th 1966, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Major Chukwuemeka Kaduna Nzeogwu, Major Chris Anuforo, Major A...

Super Eagles struggle, beat Burundi in AFCON opener

Image
Nigeria’s Super Eagles got off to a winning start at the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, finals after Odion Ighalo came off the bench to score the only goal of an engaging duel at the Alexandria Stadium. In the event, the Super Eagles picked the three points and took an early lead in Group B ahead of the second match of the pool between Guinea and Madagascar. Nigeria dominated possession in the early stages but the Burundians were the ones with the very clear chances. Onuachu put two headers past the Burundian goalpost in the 7th and 13th minute, but a minute later, Cedric Amissi came close to getting the Itamba in front when he latched onto a well–placed pass and stung Akpeyi’s palms with a fierce, close range shot. Onuachu’s tame shot in the 27th minute was held by the Burundian goalie, and a minute later, Samuel Chukwueze sliced a decent chance in the box horribly wide. Gael Bigirimana, Abdoul Fiston, Amissi and Said Berahino were a thorn in the flesh of the Nigeri...

FRI 21 JUN 2019:AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS - GROUP A Egypt 1 Zimbabwe 0

Image
Hosts Egypt made the ideal start to the Africa Cup of Nations by beating Zimbabwe in the opening game of the tournament in Cairo. Mahmoud Trezeguet scored the only goal of the game with a curled finished just before half time. Liverpool forward Mo Salah came close to doubling his side's lead in the second half but his low drive was kept out by Zimbabwe keeper Edmore Sibanda.Ovidy Karuru had Zimbabwe's best chance with a 30-yard strike late on. This year's tournament is the biggest Africa Cup of Nations ever with 24 teams, and the first to be played in Europe's summer. It got off to a spectacular start, with the fans inside the 75,000 capacity Cairo International Stadium treated to an eye-catching opening ceremony that featured giant pyramids on the pitch, elegant dancers forming the shape of a pharaoh's face and culminating in a huge fireworks display. But the game itself failed to match that level of sparkle, with Egypt dominating for large period...
